SOMA Deacons Book Drive
The Soma Deacons Book Drive is an initiative under the Deacons Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) education pillar. The objective of the education pillar is to provide children with little or no access to reading material with story and curriculum books. This initiative was launched in October, 2012 and is now in its third year since inception. The initiative has provided an opportunity for Deacons customers, staff members and well-wishers to donate books to various schools in need. Since inception, the organization has collected approximately 35,000 books.
The following schools have benefited from the Soma, Deacons Books Drive.
- Our Lady of Mercy Girls high school – Shauri Moyo
- Beyond the Vision School (Primary School) – Tassia
- Peter Kibukosya Primary School – Umoja Phase 2
- New Star Light Children of Zion School – Korogocho
Year 2014 and 2015
- New Star Light School – Korogocho
- Beyond the Vision School (Primary School) – Tassia
- Malili Primary School – Machakos
- Salvation Army Kavyuni Secondary School – Machakos
Here is what some of our beneficiary schools had to say:
Running a school without books is like driving a car without fuel. Beyond the vision was running with one book per subject per class, which was the teacher’s copy. After Deacons donated books, the academic performance of students at the school has greatly improved with the reading culture taking root plus improvement of the children’s spoken English. Due to insecurity, we received a storage container from Deacons to store the books hence theft cases stopped. We would like to thank Deacons Kenya for this great initiative that has changed the lives of children at the Tassia slums and other arears in Kenya. We would also like to thank the general public for heeding to the Deacons call to donate books.Jacqueline Musyoka – Founder, Beyond the Vision School in Tassia
It gives us great pleasure as Our Lady of Mercy Girls Secondary family to thank Deacons for partnering with our school. The girls were sharing books to a ratio of 1.3. We received so many books of all subjects that the school became instantly self-sufficient. Teacher's got reference books, students continue to enjoy story books and the book ratio has improved to1.1. The books have created a reading culture in our school and our KCSE results have improved, allowing us to send many girls to Universities and Colleges in Kenya and abroad. Thank you Deacons. May God continue to bless you as you serve underprivileged mankind.Mrs Esther Angwenyi - Principal, Our Lady of Mercy Girls Secondary School in Shauri Moyo
The first book donation in 2013 from Deacons impacted the school greatly as it was the year that the school attained the highest grade in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).The best pupil attained 401 marks out of the overall 500 marks. We wish to thank everyone who donated a book. You have transformed lives. The water tank donation has allowed the pupils to enjoy having tank water and the hygiene standards of the school have improved due to availability of water. Thank you and may God bless you.Mr. Dickens Otieno – Principal, New Starlight Children of Zion School, Korogocho

Deacons Breast Health Initiative
The Deacons Breast Health Initiative was launched in 2009 to educate high school female students (ages 14 to 19 years) on breast health matters including knowing their bra size and breast cancer awareness. The program has accorded Deacons the opportunity to interact with students from rural and urban settings and has impacted over 15,000 students from 19 high schools. Each year (except the inception year), an average of 3 schools are visited by Deacons female staff members .In a bid to provide holistic education on breast health, Deacons has partnered with a medical institution such as Kenyatta National Hospital and Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital.
In addition to the above, In 2015, Deacons extended its support towards breast cancer awareness and management by donating post- mastectomy bras and breast prosthesis (forms) worth more than Ksh600,000 to the Twakutukuza Trust.
In 2014, the entire Deacons staff from Kenya and representatives from Uganda and Rwanda engaged in a tree planting exercise at the Karura forest and planted over four hundred (400) trees.
Since 2012, Deacons Rwanda Limited participates in the National Umuganda day – a day set aside to commemorate the Rwanda genocide. On this occasion, staff members set out to clean a small village as well as donate food stuffs to the community.
In May 2012, Deacons through its Babyshop brand donated baby clothes worth Ksh 1.1 Million to underprivileged mothers in the maternity ward at the Kenyatta National Hospital. In the same year, in partnership with the same hospital, while celebrating the 1st birthday of the first Kenyan baby born at 400 grams, Deacons donated a baby cot/crib and other baby essentials.
